Make Fun a Workplace Priority for Happier Staff and Clients

Make Fun a Workplace Priority for Happier Staff and Clients

We all have to grow up, but holding on to your inner child can help your business more than you think. Makenna Johnston at Tiny Buddha says the end result of fun in the workplace isn't just happier employees, but happier clients.

Johnston describes her experience at an otherwise boring 9 to 5. At some point, fun started manifesting itself intrinsically. Her team, for one reason or another, started calling her "Mama Duck" and she called her team "The Ducks". The more fun the team had, the more fun they began to learn to have with their clients, sending them carefully Photoshopped images of birthday cakes decorated with the client's company colors. And, all of a sudden, the office became a better place to work:

The moments were expansive. Each led to happier meetings. Happier clients. Happier team members.

Advertising campaigns became opportunities to reflect our fun (and they worked).

And while we played, work was completed, on time.

The curtain lowered.

And lo and behold, professionalism didn't dissipate. The company didn't fall apart. If anything, we all received a moment of joy in our otherwise slog of a job. Turns out, play isn't just for after the work day.

If your workplace is a bit boring, try injecting a litte fun—even if it's small. Don't be afraid to joke or take some time out of the day to focus on creating joy in the workplace. And don't do it just for yourself. Do it for your clients too.
