Watch Out for Unnecessary Treatments at the Dentist

Watch Out for Unnecessary Treatments at the Dentist

We all know that you should see a dentist twice a year for basic cleanings. If you regularly brush and floss, you may not need other dental work. Dentists can't increase their income doing just basic cleanings. Some practices are trying to up sell you into procedures you may not need.

Over at Mother Jones they examine the "creative diagnosis" some dentists come up with. These diagnoses require thousands of dollars of treatment without warning. Second opinions by mainstream dentists find nothing wrong and no treatment necessary.

Some dentists are on the level and only suggest treatments in your best interest. Mother Jones has some things to watch out for:

beware of specials: That laser dentistry and whitening package may be a ploy to get you in the door so the practice can upsell you on more-profitable procedures. Van Dyk also advises caution if your dentist insists on replacing all your old fillings or always recommends crowns instead of fillings. And look out for excessive X-rays: The ADA says healthy patients need a full set (14 to 22) every two years at the most. If your dentist recommends a special "cone-beam" X-ray, get a second opinion, since, along with a 3-D picture of your mouth, it delivers a dose of radiation up to 18 times that of a traditional dental X-ray.

Your best line of defense is always a second opinion before an expensive or invasive treatment

Score Great Cyber Monday Deals on VIZIO TVs From Amazon and Target

Target's Cyber Monday TV deals are live, and the highlights are a variety of VIZIO Smart TVs at low prices, and with generous gift cards thrown in for good measure. In many cases though, Amazon has either matched the deal, or beaten it by about $20 with cash discounts for Prime members (get a free trial here). Just note that if you're taking advantage of the Prime savings, you'll see the discount at checkout.

While we're on the topic of VIZIO, some of our favorite Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals were on VIZIO sound bars, and they're both still available.

Sync Solver Brings Your Fitbit Data to Apple’s Healthkit

Sync Solver Brings Your Fitbit Data to Apple's Healthkit

iOS: We've covered some of the apps that send data to iOS 8's Healthkit. Fitbit doesn't directly talk to Healthkit. Sync Solver fixes that problem.

After you install the app, it syncs in the background once a day to Healthkit. Fitbit's API doesn't allow continuously syncing like the Fitbit app does. If you have an iPhone 5S or higher you'll need to tweak Healthkit to prevent recording steps twice.

Search engines like Pipl allow you to find information on just about anyone. If you'd like to get your information removed, Computerworld has a giant list of opt-out links for the most popular sites.

Each service has different rules for opting out, and they don't make it easy to find the instructions. Removing your information may take some work, but you'll be safer in the long run. If you do opt-out, run a search a month or so later and see if they honored your request.
