Consider Religious & Cultural Holidays When Planning Winter Travel

Religious or cultural holidays may cause sights and other things to be closed when you travel. This is especially common towards the end of the year, when many countries celebrate Christmas, the start of the new year, or other holidays. Keep this in mind when choosing where to go for winter trips.

Lisa Byrne of Italy Perfect gives a good example:

"Rome books up well in advance of December, with people interested in Vatican papal audiences and midnight Masses."

You can apply this thinking to any destination or time of year. With a little research into local religious or cultural holidays, you can avoid visiting places where hotels are extremely booked or attractions are closed.
