Having a TV in the gym can be a welcome distraction, but what if your TV show is the workout? In the style of drinking games, you can do exercises based on what you see on the screen. You can invent your own or use one of these, already created for things like Doctor Who, football games, or Game of Thrones.
Before you start, decide what you'll do between triggers. If you have a TV by your treadmill, and some extra space nearby, you can walk or jog while you watch and then jump off to do exercises. If you're watching in your living room, consider standing up the whole time (so you'll feel weird if you're not doing anything) and do a few jumping jacks when the plot is slow.
Here are some games we found:
- The Doctor Who workout includes crunches when you hear the Tardis, and V-ups anytime a Dalek says "Exterminate!"
- The Harry Potter workout requires jumping jacks every time a spell is cast, and squats whenever a house is awarded points
- This Commercials workout makes a great add-on for any TV show, and includes lunges for car ads and squats for fast food.
- The Super Bowl workout could work for any football game (jumping jacks for a touchdown, Macarena for a 2-point conversion), although there won't be as many aging rock stars (chicken dance) or wardrobe malfunctions (burpees).
Dozens of others are out there, including Game of Thrones, How I Met Your Mother, Walking Dead, The Lion King, Big Bang Theory, and many, many more.
