Shopping online is convenient, but between shipping costs and shipping times, it isn't always ideal. In-store pickup solves both problems: you order it at home, avoid shipping costs, and get your item in minutes without looking through the store. Here are the retailers leading the charge.
Babies R Us/Toys R Us
Shop on the Babies R Us or Toys R Us web site, choose your home store by entering your zip code, and select "Free Store Pickup" at checkout. Once you place your order, you'll get an email notification confirming the product is in stock and ready to be picked up. Be sure to bring this email with you when picking up your order.
According to their web site, you also have the option of having someone else pick up your order. Select the "Store Pickup Option" tab, followed by "Someone else will pick up this item(s)" and follow the instructions. Items will be available for pick-up in an hour or less when ordered between 8am – 8pm.
Best Buy
During checkout, select "Store Pickup" and your local store of choice. Complete your purchase and wait for a "Ready for Pickup" email. According to Best Buy, most items will be available within two hours during regular business hours. Be sure to bring the credit card you used for the purchase, a photo ID, and your order number. Many Best Buy stores have reserved parking spaces right up front marked "Store Pickup". Once inside, head for the "Store Pickup" sign to quickly get your order.
If you need someone else to pick up your order, select "Friends & Family Pickup" when checking out. You'll need to enter their name, email, and phone number and they'll have to show their ID at the store.
Dick's Sporting Goods
When shopping on the Dick's web site, select "Check Store Availability" under the item you wish to purchase. Then select your desired pickup store by entering your zip code. If the item is available for in-store pickup, you'll need to select "Pick Up in Store" during checkout. Once your item is ready, you'll receive an email notification. Bring in this notification, along with a valid photo ID to claim your purchase. Only the person that placed the order can pick it up. According to Dick's stated policy, orders placed between 8am - 5pm, Monday through Friday, will usually be available within two hours.
Fry's Electronics
Shop at Fry's.com, add items to your cart, then click on "In-Store Pickup" from the cart page to start the process. You'll be prompted to enter your zip code so you can select the most convenient Fry's location. If your order is eligible, you simply check out and wait for an email confirmation stating your order is ready. This takes only 20 minutes on average according to a Fry's rep I spoke with. Bring that email, along with the credit card you used to any register at your selected store. According to Fry's stated policy, only the name on the credit card can pick up the order.
Home Depot
When checking out, on the "Shopping Cart" page, select the "Ship to Store" option and select your local store. After you have finalized your purchase you'll get two emails. The first is an order confirmation and the second will notify you when your order is ready to be picked up. Bring this email, along with a valid photo ID, to the customer service desk to get your order. The Home Depot web site states most orders will be ready for pickup within two hours. If you are a professional contractor, specify when placing your order that you would like to pick up at the Pro Desk.
JCPenney
When checking out from JCPenney.com, click on "Pick Up at Store", enter your zip code, and then select your home store location. While you will not be charged shipping fees, you'll have to wait 4-7 business days for your order to be mailed to your local store. You'll get an email when your order arrives and only the person that placed the order can pick it up. Be sure to bring the email along with the purchasing credit card when picking up your purchase.
Kohl's
Kohl's in-store pickup program is new and currently being rolled out. Not all stores participate. To determine if your local store does, click on "Find in Store" on the product page. If eligible, your order will be available for pick up within four hours. You'll get an email confirmation letting you know your order is ready. Bring in the email along with a photo ID and head to the customer service desk. Only the person who placed the order can pick it up.
Kmart
Kmart in-store pickup simplifies the process by putting a "Store Pickup" label directly on the product page of eligible products. To see if your local store carries the product, enter your zip code on the "Product Detail" page. Once you place your order you'll get an email confirmation (usually within two hours during regular business hours) when it is ready to be picked up. Bring your email confirmation along with the purchasing credit card to any open register or service desk.
To designate another person to pick up your order, select the "someone else will pick up my order" box when checking out. Enter their name and email address and they'll get an email when the order is ready. They'll need to print out and bring that email with them.
Lowe's
From the shopping cart page on Lowes.com select "Store Pickup" as your delivery method of choice. Once you finalize your purchase you'll get an email when it's ready to be picked up. According to Lowe's, for popular, in-stock items, it'll take 2-3 hours to get an email, longer for orders with large quantities but typically less than 24 hours. Once you get confirmation, head to the customer service register with your photo ID to claim your order. You can also designate someone else to pick up your order when checking out from the Lowe's web site. They'll also need a photo ID and email confirmation.
Macy's
Macy's recently rolled out their "Buy Online, Pick Up in Store" program. When shopping on Macys.com, look for items marked "NEW! Pick Up in Store" to determine eligible items. At checkout, select your home store, and pick which items to pick up and which to have delivered to your home. You'll get an email when your order is ready to be picked up, typically within 3 hours. Also, during checkout, you can designate someone to pick up the order for you. They'll need to bring photo ID and confirmation email to the store.
Office Depot
On the shopping cart page select "In-store Pickup" then pick your local store. Next, complete your order and wait for an email confirming it's ready to be picked up. According to Office Depot, most orders will be ready within one hour. If you place your order within two hours of the store closing, it will be ready for pickup one hour after the store opens the following morning. Bring in your confirmation email, valid photo ID, and credit card used. Office Depot will only release the order to the person who placed it.
Sears
Sears has a standard in-store pickup system in place for those wanting to walk into the store to grab an item ordered online. But after that, Sears is particularly awesome. They've taken in-store pickup to the next level with their Shop Your Way app for iOS and Android. By using the app, a Sears employee will bring your order out to your car while you wait. After selecting "Store Pickup" when checking out from their web site, select "I would like to pick up my items curbside," and enter your vehicle information. Once you receive an email confirmation that your order is ready, just cruise down to your local Sears, park in a merchandise pickup spot, tell the store you have arrived via the app, and an employee will bring out your order within five minutes. If it takes longer, you'll score a $5 coupon. Be sure to have your photo ID and credit card available for verification purposes.
Target
When checking out from Target.com, select "Store Pickup" and you'll get an email confirmation when your order is ready to be picked up. Head directly to the Guest Service desk and be prepared to show valid photo ID. According to Target, for same-day pickup, your order must be completed online by 5pm local time, or at least 4 hours prior to closing, whichever is earliest. Only the person who placed the order can pick it up.
Walmart
When checking out from Walmart.com, select "Store Pickup" and choose your desired location. Complete your purchase and wait for an email confirmation stating your order is ready. For most items this is typically within four hours, unless after 6pm, in which case you won't hear back until the following morning. Walmart also states that you can get a text alert when your order is ready by entering your mobile number at checkout. If you need someone else to pick up your purchase, you can add them at checkout as well. Be prepared to show email confirmation and photo ID at time of pick up.
Look for retailers to continue to roll out new in-store pickup programs to entice online shoppers into their brick and mortar stores. Retailers love the foot traffic and add-on purchases it brings, and shoppers love the convenience.
