Replace a Broken Sprinkler Head Without Calling a Plumber

Replace a Broken Sprinkler Head Without Calling a Plumber

Broken sprinkler heads should be replaced quickly, as they waste water and are ineffective for irrigating your lawn. You don't need to call a plumber to fix it, though—you can do it yourself.

If you're lucky, you can just remove the broken sprinkler by turning it counterclockwise and screwing on a new one. It's best to bring your broken sprinkler head with you to Home Depot or Lowe's and match it up with a new one.

Often, though, a sprinkler head is broken at the base and the PVC pipe needs to be replaced. If that's the case, you'll need to cut out the broken or cracked section of PVC and replace it with a new one. You'll also need a 3/4 coupler to join the old pipe with the new, 3/4 inch PVC elbow, and 3/4" to 1/2" step down that will attach to the sprinkler head.

The only tools required are a small hacksaw to cut the pipe and PVC cement that bonds the sections together. Give the PVC cement about 10 minutes to cure before running water through the system to test.
