If you have student loans that are in default, the Department of Education could claim your tax refund to help repay them. Before you make plans for your tax refund, make sure you'll actually get it.
The government is able to do this because of the Treasury Offset Program, which allows some state and federal creditors to directly pull from your tax refund before it gets to you. The same could happen if you have past due child support, back taxes, and unemployment compensation that you owe the state.
