Get Free Extra Packing Space by Checking a Car Seat or Stroller

Get Free Extra Packing Space by Checking a Car Seat or Stroller

If you're travelling with a child, most airlines will allow you to check a bag containing a car seat or stroller at no additional cost. You can use some of the leftover space for some free checked items.

Jason Steele at blog The Points Guy explains how you can use the checking loophole to your advantage:

...it's a good idea to place it in a large duffel bag to ensure that it stays clean and doesn't catch on any straps in the luggage processing system. Since you're checking a duffel bag anyways, there's no harm in using some of that additional space for items that you can't fit or aren't permitted to bring in your carry-on. Ideal candidates include bulky items such as an extra towel or beach blanket, as well as a bottle of your favorite shampoo that's too big to bring through security.

Most of the major airlines—including Delta, Southwest, and United—will allow this, and might give you enough extra room to save you some money. You have to have the child present to get the checked bag most of the time, so don't even try if you're just trying to score some extra space for yourself.
