The Best Things to Buy in February

January is the biggest discount month of the year, but a lot of the winter sales carry over into February—not to mention a few new sales thanks to annual trade shows. Here are the best things to buy this month.

Every month, we look back at the best times to buy anything during the year, and pull out items each month to remind you what's coming. Obviously, none of this is to say you should go on a shopping spree—but if you've been holding off for a lower price on something, these are the things that get the sale treatment in February.

All Winter

• Boats: If you're looking to get your sea legs, now's a good time to start looking at boats. This is for a number of reasons, as the folks over at Boatline and Bankrate suggest: First; it's boat show season, which means that you can buy used boats at discounted prices while everyone gets excited for the new models. And second; it's the off season in many parts of the country—not a lot of people take their boats out in the dead of winter—so demand is down, along with prices.
• Computer Monitors: Black Friday isn't the only time to grab cheap computer monitors. January and February are inventory clearance time, according to CNET, which means that you're going to find some nice sales as manufacturers clear the way for other models. Check out our guide on picking the best monitor to find the right one for you.
• Gas Grills & Air Conditioners: If you live in a colder area, February is a trying month. Luckily, summer-centric products like grills and air conditioners are quite a bit cheaper, says Bankrate, since no one else is really looking to get one. If you're in the market, now's a good time to grab.
• Wedding Supplies: Like grills, everyone is waiting for the spring to plan their wedding—which means it's much easier to find a venue and negotiate prices this month, before the nice weather hits. Maybe an indoor wedding is right for you instead. While you're at it, check out this list of other ways to save on your wedding.
• Winter Coats & Clothing: For obvious reasons, the later you get into winter, the cheaper winter clothing gets. If you can wait until the end of the season, both TIME and Dealnews agree: you can find some nice discounts.

February

• Broadway Tickets: It's the off season, so prices are down for Broadway and off-Broadway shows this time of year. • Cellphones: Cellphones may not be your ideal Valentine's Day gift, but as Mark Di Vincenzo notes in his book Buy Shoes on Wednesday and Tweet at 4:00, lots of cellphone carriers have some good 2-for-1 sales for you and your sweetie over the holiday.
• HDTVs & Home Theaters: Even if you aren't a sports fan, the pre-Super Bowl sales are definitely worth checking out—that is, if you didn't get a new TV during the Black Friday rush. New models are coming out later in the spring, according to CNET and Dealnews, which means unless you're gunning for new technolgies like 3D, there's no shame in getting last year's model while prices are low. (2015 note: Unfortunately, the Super Bowl fell pretty early this year, but you should still be able to find some good prices throughout the month.)

Spend Money on Things You Love, Not Just Like, to Save More

The more money you have, the more ways you'll find to spend it all. To get a handle on your impulsive spending, divide your potential purchases into two categories: likes, and loves. Then toss out the former.

As personal finance blog The Smile Lifestyle explains, spending money on things you only like is a quick way to pour money down the drain for very little benefit. Doing something you only like makes you a little happier for a moment, but it actively takes away from things you could be doing that you'll really love. By definition, it's not worth the trade off:

Take a step back and ask yourself, "how many purchases have you made that you only liked and didn't really love?" Quite a few? You're not alone. Imagine all my $40 dinners I had in span of a 30 days. That's $1200 enough for an all inclusive trip to the Dominican Republic for two people. I would complain I didn't have the money to go on vacation but I was continuing to buy things I liked over what I said I loved…traveling.

Sometimes doing what you like can be a treat that you need (like eating out at the end of a hard week). However, you probably know what it is you love and what will make you happy long term. If you find that you're never able to afford the things you love, take a look at how much money you're spending on things you like.

Defeat Awkward Silences with Laughter

High-pressure situations and normal social interactions alike lend themselves to awkward pauses. When you don't know what else to do, make 'em laugh.

As business blog Inc. points out, making someone laugh is one of the best ways to break awkward tensions and get conversation (or presentations!) moving again. If something's going wrong, you can even turn that into a moment of levity for the sake of your audience, as Rob Brydon did during a presentation of the BAFTA awards:

There was silence. While waiting for the next award, Rob Brydon, the Welsh comedian host and BAFTA nominee himself, stood on stage for a few awkward minutes in silence until he finally said, "This is the nervous smile of a man waiting for the auto cue to work again." The silence was broken, and everyone laughed. The speeches could resume. Self-effacing humor at its best.

Of course, there are always moments where silence is not awkward, but in fact entirely appropriate (please don't try this at a funeral). But if your goal is for your audience or conversation partner to be light hearted, awkward moments are just opportunities for you to make someone laugh.
